About
Día de los Muertos is Mexico's Day of the Dead, and for four days over Halloween the Holzmarkt on the Spree turns into a small piece of Mexico: an altar with candles and marigolds, mariachi, cumbia and boleros on two stages, screen printing, Mexican food stalls, and a children's programme every afternoon. Children can have their faces painted, decorate calaveritas (the little sugar skulls that decorate the altar) and make their own cempasúchil flower crowns; on Saturday La Llorona walks through the square as a walking act, and on Friday evening a storyteller tells stories about life and death. It is a relaxed, family-friendly festival by day, with plenty of space for pushchairs and no need to book anything in advance. Entry is €3 on Friday and Sunday, €5 on Saturday and free on Monday 2 November. Most of the programme and the food stalls are in Spanish and German, and the craft tables need no language at all. Note that the Säälchen club hosts a separate Cumbia party from 21:00 with its own ticket, which is aimed at adults.
